A marking knife is unique because one side of the blade is flat enabling the user to slide against a square with no offset from the edge of the square to the cutting edge. Our timber framing crew use marking knives to score a line before beginning to cut a mortise or tenon. This ensure that there is no tear out on the surface of the wood as the chiseling begins.
The handle is designed to be held in the right hand but because the blade as two cutting edges, it can be used to draw a line forward or backward. It has a Japanese White Oak Handle that is lightly oiled and the steel of the blade is layered and holds an edge. It comes with a leather sheath to protect the blade when not in use. It is ideal for effortlessly slicing a thin layer of wood grain.
